About Amal

Founder and Director of Evangelashram

Brother Amal
the founder and president of Evangelashram Charitable Society, provides inspiration and encouragement for the whole Evangelashram team. Jesus says, “…apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Amal strongly believes that every good thing comes from God and so anything good can be achieved only through His grace.  Amal seeks God’s help and our support to accomplish the noble mission of - A WORLD DEVOID OF DESTITUTE BY 2040. He works passionately for this mission day and night by trusting in God’s Word, “I can do all things in him who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13).

Amal was born to Augustine Cheruthuruthy and Philomena Kalathiparambil as their second son.  He does not have any memories of his mother who died along with his twin brothers at the time of delivery. His father Augustine remarried. And little Amal was taken care by his grandmother Brigit (Bava) and he stayed with her. While studying in fifth standard Amal`s beloved grandma also left him to receive the crown of eternal life. Amal became alone and lonely after the sad demise of his grandma. Later for 19 years he lived a life of solitude struggling to make both ends meet. He survived by the income which came from business and part time jobs and also from his grandmother’s property. Just as Amal has not seen his mother, his grandmother also has not seen her own mother. Since Amal was brought up by Brigit, who belonged to Panikkasseril family, he is closely bonded with them and also with his great grandmother’s family Kanappilly that had brought up his grandmother Brigit.

Amal was mischievous in his early days comparing to any other child of his age. Many times his life was in off beats as he did not grow up under the care of parents or in a good family atmosphere. Though Amal was less privileged of life’s provisions, he was enthusiastic in the field of arts and sports and was interested in social service from the early days of his youth. So he started doing humanitarian service along with his parish and also by himself, such as taking the victims of road accidents to the hospitals, helping in the construction of the houses, toilets and roads for the poor.

Gramotsav – a conglomerate of many panchayats was brother Amal’s brainchild. This initiative and movement which helped in the upliftment of many talented youngsters of national and international fame in the field of arts and sports was later taken over by the Government of Kerala and implemented in different organizations and societies.

Amal realized the abounding goodness, love and care of God the Almighty when he incidentally attended the last two days of Jesus Youth Convention at Trivandrum in 1987. Jesus Youth Convention is a very enthusiastic and spiritual international youth organization under the wings of Charismatic movement. Amal developed a deep desire to know more about the Lord. The very night after the convention he went through the Holy Bible repeatedly, but could not understand a word. Dejected, he closed the Holy Scripture and cried repenting for all his sins. Instantly an inner voice asked him to open the Bible again upon which he came across the verse:

“ Thus says the Lord : Do not let the wise boast in their wisdom, do not let the mighty boast in their might, do not let the wealthy boast in their wealth, but let those boast in this, that they understand and know me, that I am the Lord. I act with steadfast love, justice and righteousness in the Earth, for in these things I delight, says the Lord (Jeremiah 9:23 & 24).

Amal who was till then leading a life as a successful businessman was proud upon his wisdom and wealth. But he was greatly moved by the Bible verses and decided to lead a prayerful life. And he received the verse “Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38).

Amal`s life thereafter was a journey to find the depth and meaning of the Bible. Through “Jesus Youth” he was able to take up Bible classes and spiritual training courses at “Emmavus,” the Kerala Charismatic Centre. Brother Amal has preached in many retreat centres and at many gatherings along with eminent priests including Rev. Fr. Mathew Naikkamparambil VC (World famous preacher and spiritual director of Divine-Potta Retreat Centre), and Rev. Fr. George Kuttickal MCBS (famous preacher and founder of Friends of the birds of the air and the God father of jail ministry and street ministry in India). Amal is holding different positions in various organizations and societies. Rev. Fr. Oswald CMI has been the inspiration, advisor and support all through Amal`s spiritual journey and played an important role in leading him to this noble mission.

Amal started his mission when he met a mute boy whose entire body - bar his face, was putrefied and infected with worms in 1981. It was at this moment that God touched and inspired Amal to reveal a mission which he was to fulfill for the sake of God. Amal listened to God’s call –“Hurry out to the streets and alleys of the town and bring the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame. Go out to the country roads and the lanes and make the people come in so that my house will be full.” (Luke 14:21) Thus he started working towards accomplishing God’s will.

Amal continues his mission by organizing residential retreats every month .The retreat starts at 6pm on first Sunday and ends at 4pm on the following Saturday. This retreat is totally free of any cost and charges. The main aim is to find dedicated volunteers for our mission of creating a world devoid of destitute by 2040. It is those thoughtful supporters, who by knowing all the weaknesses, shortcomings and failures of Amal, yet tried to find the good qualities in him with much prayer, are the pillars who led Amal in ways of righteousness till date. Had there not been such compassionate supporters like you, Amal would not have been able to come a long way. And it is his heartfelt belief that there are yet many to come and join him in this venture.

The Lord Almighty delights when his whole creation enjoys the state of eternal peace  and harmony. Over the centuries there were many who have toiled to see the Kingdom of God to be established. Some have already gone to their everlasting abode, some became martyrs while battling for the very cause and others let everything lose to see the beauty of a new world, where the homeless will be home, poor will be provided, the sick is taken care, the light of knowledge is brought to the illiterate and the hungry will be fed . There are yet many who strive hard for establishing this blissful atmosphere on earth. We call out to you to participate in this sacred task. Let there be a New World Through Us…Greater will be the reward for those who have lived and continue to live their lives for the nameless ones.

Amal invites all likeminded people to be a part of this great mission and rescue as many these orphan children and forsaken ones from the streets and give them a new life of safety and hope through us.
